Rheem vs American Standard in FL

Looking for feedback between two systems that are priced similar for install. I’ve had an American Standard for 18 years and looking to replace it. I have a quote for a new American 15 seer, single stage similarly priced to a Rheem 16 seer 3 stage. Both have 10 year parts warranty. I know American is know for their reliability but Rheem would have more tech/features. I live in FL so its hot, house is 2100sqft. Same company would install either one. But do I get the lower Seer, less tech, American Standard in hopes they still make better quality units or go for the 3 stage Rheem. Better seer, better eletric bill, more humidity control, etc.?

I would like to thank @eggs and @waldo for not only making realize how simple it is to change out the motor and find the part but also giving me the motivation to actually do it.
You weren't kidding that the blower is just held in by a few screws and slides out. Then the motor pops off with four bolts. It took me 20m to remove the blower, 15m to get the fan off the shaft, 20m to reinstall. You guys saved me $10k today, hopefully there is a lot of life left in the unit.

So let's look at this in a different way. if the motor was $1200,even though we can find one for less, to put this into perspective - Your car has a tire that keeps loosing air, so we want to replace the car. We know that tire is exspsive because of its size and type - but to spend $25,000 on another car for the cost of a tire just does not make sense.

The unit you have, if repaired properly will give you 10 - 15 years more life easily. So what we are attempting to do is help you save $8,000 t0 $10,000. Both Waldo and I are on the same page here. The blower replacement is simple, and yes - contractors make crap up all the time - DO NOT listen to them. Trane is top dog in this equipment out there - if maintained will give you 30+ years of life. My AC is 45 year old, made in 1980 and runs great - I just keep it clean it and it takes care of me.

Jumping treads causes all of us problems, so like Waldo stated - please keep to one, this one is fine. I will close the other one. To open another is like we are looking at a new person, are issues and we are chasing our tail around.

It is your best interest to replace the fan motor - do not worry about that one saying it is a 1/2 or 3/4 hp, The spec says 3/4 hp, so it is a 3/4 hp. People posts pictures all the time on things being sold and find generic pictures, may or may not be the correct ones.

Dining leaks on a system can be difficult, but not impossible - use soapy water over all fittings and joints is a good way to find them, then have those leaks repaired. If you think a new system will give you trouble free for years to come, so will this system if the small issues are resolved.

The refrigerant R22 can be replaced with MO99 ir R438a and a fraction of the cost. Techs do not tell you this as they make more money welling you a new system over doing a repair.

As I stated earlier before we found this is a duplicate - Simple is better - Stay away from variable or multi speed AC units - lower SEER is better - American Standard (Trane) is top dog here, with what ever they ask.

Once you start and get the blower replaced, you will look back at this and say - that was not too bad at all - and you still have all that cash saved.

Please post the model numbers of your current indoor and outdoor units. If you have some basic mechanical skills replacing a blower motor is usually a simple 1-2 hour job. A leak definitely needs to be located and repaired. Eggs will know whether you can find the leak before fixing the blower so you have an idea what you are looking at.

If you like large repair bills, go with the 3 stage - if you want low repair bills and simple, stick with the American Standard (which by the way is a Trane).

You will never save enough money going with the 3 stage over the cost. The more tech, the more issues. Simple and sweet is always best.

To put this into perspective - a 16 SEER vs 20 SEER might save as much as $2 - $3 a month. The cost of operating a 3 stage is more than the operation of a single stage.

Bigger question, what is wrong with the existing unit. You should be able to get 30 years out of it.
