My basement is cold. There is one register for a large room. It has a 6" duct going to it and a 14"x6" register. There is a lot of airflow coming through as it is 5 feet from the furnace. If I expand the register, will I get more airflow into the room? Solutions?

The furnace was not designed to heat both the main house and the basement. The more air you let into the basement, the less heat for the house. If you insulate the basement walls and floor would be a start. Electric baseboard heaters would be a better option. Basements normally maintain around 50-60 degrees year around as they are normally under ground. Attempting to heat it with out insulating can be very expensive. The reason the small duct is there, the heat does rise and helps stop the possibility of freezing water lines.
