Good Morning:
As you can see in this photo, this is the location of the return air trunk. Previous people on here said I need to relocate it to the wall which is to the right. On the otherside of the wall is the hallway that leads to the upstairs attic bedroom and two other bedrooms. How can I build this opening to run over to the wall? I plan on putting in a filtered grate at that wall.

You have several issues here. NEVER return air though an open space like an attic. Duct work should go from the furnace to the area that is finished that requires the return. I can only imagine the nasty things you are pulling back to the furnace. Find a good HVAC guy to help resolve.
