Good Source For Technicians

We are a specialty heating & cooling company in So. Cal. Where does everyone find personnel? What's a good source for finding qualified people, no more Craigslist flakes!

Same problem everywhere I'm afraid. Pay better than everyone else, have a great benefit package and treat everyone as well as your kids.

Re: Good Source For Technicians

It has become pretty bad that the critera for hiring personel is that they
1. have a D.L. that is valid!
2. will show up every day
3. will show up everyday SOBER.
4. will not steal from you!
And with those seemingly basic requirements, you still cant find anybody.
Unemployment rates hitting all time highs and nobody is going out of their way to prove that they can work.
Everybody wants a job, and a paycheck, but nobody! wants to work.
I get tired of watching the news and seeing mass media showing you a guy standing there with his bottom lip sticking out and a caption that goes like " all this guy needs is a chance and society is hold him back. please someone give him a chance."
A week later he is calling in sick or making excuses why he really cant do the job, but still needs to get paid.
I could go on but it just gets you P.O.'d
Acme, hang in there brother, you are not alone!

Re: Good Source For Technicians

Know the problem-well. Been a one man band for the better part of my contracting career of 5 years but while working for other contractors for 13 years before that, I saw my share of "dead wood" in the labor pool. For that reason, I do every aspect of my business myself with my wife doing the books and office work. I estimate, install, service and maintain everything. I have a close friend who part times ocasionally with larger installations. He has been fully trained and is well qualified, but works another 40 hour a week job with good benefits already. My 14 year old son comes and helps on some jobs as well. Even in this hard-to-make-it economy, my phone keeps ringing and I fill the schedule every week, sometimes working 60-80 hours a week. This is because my work is exceptional. No advertising, just word of mouth here. I just wish the jobs were more involved and paying more. Still, if I need to hire someone, I am at a loss as well. Who is going to work the way I do? My reputation and business is going to ride on the shoulders of someone who may not have an interest in whether or not my business continues to succeed or not. I feel your pain.

Re: Good Source For Technicians

Actually, we are a union company. Most of our help comes from a hiring hall the union maintains. Most of the personel from the hall are good, but the majority of those men are from the industrial and heavy commercial aspect of air handling systems (ductwork). When it comes to residential service and installation, the only guys who know anything about this stuff are the new apprentices because they are taught this part of the trade in school. However, they don't get much of a chance to use the knowledge in the field, which makes them as reliable as a new kid just out of tech school. The problem here is by being a union contractor I can only hire from the hall, or if I hire from outside, the person I hire must join the union, which to some people is a deterent. This just makes an already tough situation even tougher.

10-6, 5 days a week?? Those are bankers hrs. LOL. Nobody wants to interrupt their "social " life these days or wants to be a professional. The worse they are the better I look and have more jobs and $$. Not sure where they get $$ to pay for a house but the credit card companies love em.

Re: Good Source For Technicians

Ten to Six would be good hours to have a tech work. Not all your techs, but one or two.

Think about it. Instead of having everyone from 8 to 4:30 you now have someone until 6 to 6:30 in the evening without paying OT. So you can offer early evening calls without charging OT.

We work 8- 2am at times here. No joke. Problem is people come home from the casino all wide awake at 1 am and are willing to wait for a serviceman to come "help" them. Ya right.
