This is a really interesting case. Judges will rule in favor of the contractor and it's sometimes because of a misinterpretation of the standard being applied to fine the contractor.

In this case it appears that the inspector had absolutely no clue about the industry, pieced together some information she might have been spoon fed by her co inspectors or from the contractor, and came up with her decision.

When a business's reputation is on line, you have to fight an injustice, but how many small or mid size contractors can afford to do that?

I'm glad Paramount did.

Electricity kills and injures people. Around 1000 electrical accidents at work are reported to HSE each year and about 25 people die of their injuries.

Many deaths and injuries arise from:

# Work near overhead power lines.
# Mains electricity supplies (230 volt).
# Use of poorly maintained electrical equipment.
# Contact with underground power cables during excavation work.
# Use of unsuitable electrical equipment in explosive areas such as car paint spraying booths.

Fires started by poor electrical installations and faulty electrical appliances cause many additional deaths and injuries.

Hi,

Preventive maintenance is essential to the proper functioning of air conditioning and heating equipment. Generally companies inspections each year. During these inspections, proper operation of the equipment is checked and verified.and if any part should be not able to work more. It is quickly replaced. If preventive maintenance is not performed regularly or if it is done haphazardly, the equipment will require extensive and costly repairs at a later date that is sooner than it should be.Your best insurance against HVAC failure and cost containment is equipment preventive maintenance.

I probably get 1 out of 10 install leads now:sad: My sales routine is good, I always do a manual J and I'm very thorough. Most of the leads are foreigners and those are always a bust, and the rest of them are looking for hackers to slam equipment in at cost. I think I need to find some new lead sources.

I was replacing a coil in the attic of a 1.4 million dollar house when I had a little accident... I pumped all the refrigerant back to the compressor and made sure there was no pressure in the lines, then I attempted to sweat the connections off the coil. The liquid line popped off with no issue as its done 1000 times before, the suction line on the other hand turned into a flame thrower... It shot fire out about 3' into this attic and did not stop for about 10 seconds. I was freaking out trying to put this bitch out. I got the flame to stop coming out of the line and then used the extinguisher to put out the oil fire that developed on the platform. I'm not sure why this happened, I have sweat off fittings after pumping down and making sure its at 0 psi many times before and at most I got a little poof. Needless to say I learned a valuable lesson, always cut lines on an existing system. So while I was frantically trying to put this fire out I took about 5 breaths of the burnt 410a fumes, this stuff is nasty... I am wondering if youguys know how toxic burnt 410a is? About 12 hrs later I went into some sort of allergic fit, I sneezed about 100 times in a 5 min period then my eyes became swollen shut. It took about 12 hrs for the swelling to go away completely. I cant be sure that the two incidents are related but I'm inclined to think so.

My two story home has (2500sq.ft) two ac units
The smaller unit is tripping the breaker
Wired breaker to an unused(same rating) one still trips
measured capacitor,it is okay .5ufd, 45ufd(two in one)
To isolate the problem further. Is it ok to power the fan compessor seperatley?
How long I can run cpompessor witout the fan on top of it?
I took apart the fan(incudig blades, rotor) and put it back together. No the the way air blowing out in ths unit and the bigger unit is different. In the bogger unit air is bowing stright out (90deg vertical) through the grill. In the smaller unit(i just put it back together) air is is coming out like in a 30deg angle area through the grill. Don't feel a lot of air movemnent in the 90deg area.Did I do anything wrong?or this is normal?
Yours comments appreciated

Hi,

I am Brian from NE Kansas - home of the KSU Wildcats. I owned and operated a custom cabinet shop for 15 years, but between the economy and just plain burnout, I decided to try my hand at HVAC. My brother is still running the shop, but I'm on to more exciting adventures.

Despite the 120 degree occasional attics, I am loving it.

I have been reading the forum for some time now, and finally to decided to throw in my 2 coppers.

Looking forward to another great day of 100+ degrees.

Okay, so I am relatively new to hvac, and especially capacitors. Serviced a 3 ton High Efficiency Unit - variable speed fan on condenser. Fan was pulling 9 amps - rating says .8 so we (my boss and I) change it out 50uf+5uf but only have a 45uf+5uf in the van. Checked the amp reading again, fan is now pulling .8 amps and compressor 9 amps.

systems works great for 6 hours.

Went back at 7 pm, compressor runs, but fan won't. The capacitor is hot as a firecracker. We pulled it and changed it out with a 50uf+5uf (we picked one up later to keep in the van). Checked original new capacitor and it is fine. Flipped on unit and everything is back to normal. We monitored it for about 20 min. and everything is good to go.

2 Hours later - call, A/C quit working.

Planning on looking at the fan motor in the morning, possible replacement.

We are both a little stumped - any insight?
